’Slow’ and Fast Rotators Among Hypervelocity Stars

We measure the rotational velocities of the late B-type hypervelocity stars HVS7 and HVS8 from high resolution spectroscopy to be 60 ± 17 km s and 260 ± 70 km s. The ’slow’ rotation of HVS7 is consistent with an origin in a binary system, however, the fast rotation of HVS8 is more common of single B-type stars. Our results suggest that HVS8 could have been ejected by a mechanism other than that...

Stratospheric variability and tropospheric annular‐mode timescales

[1] Climate models tend to exhibit much too persistent Southern Annular Mode (SAM) circulation anomalies in summer, compared to observations. Theoretical arguments suggest this bias may lead to an overly strong model response to anthropogenic forcing during this season, which is of interest since the largest observed changes in Southern Hemisphere high‐latitude climate over the last few decades...

An explanation for the kHz-QPO twin peaks separation in slow and fast rotators

An abstract should be given In this Letter we further explore the idea, suggested previously by Kluźniak and collaborators, that the high frequency QPOs may be explained as a resonant coupling between the neutron star spin and two epicyclic modes of accretion disk oscillations. We confirm result of Lee, Abramowicz and Kluźniak (2004) that the strongest response occurs when the frequency differe...

Fast and Slow Rotators: The build-up of the Red Sequence

Using the unique dataset obtained within the course of the SAURON project, a radically new view of the structure, dynamics and stellar populations of early-type galaxies has emerged. We show that galaxies come in two broad flavours (slow and fast rotators), depending on whether or not they exhibit clear large-scale rotation, as indicated via a robust measure of the specific angular momentum of ...

The ATLAS Project - VI. Simulations of binary galaxy mergers and the link with Fast Rotators, Slow Rotators, and Kinematically Distinct Cores

We study the formation of early-type galaxies (ETGs) through mergers with a sample of 70 high-resolution (softening length < 60 pc and 12×10 particles) numerical simulations of binary mergers of disc galaxies (with 10 per cent of gas) and 16 simulations of ETG remergers. These simulations, designed to accompany observations and models conducted within the ATLAS project, encompass various mass r...
